Search for Human – Story from Rumi’s Masnavi & Iqbal’s Javed Nama

Allama Iqbal has quotes several verses from his mentor Rumi, espcially in his spiritual journey to heavens and hell in Javed Nama. The book begins with an Ode to Allah following another Ode to Prophet. It’s very interesting that his verses to God has elements of lament and complain, just like Shikwah. However, the tone changes to extreme respect and reverence when Iqbal speaks with Prophet.

Here are verses from Masnavi of Mevlana Rumi, which Iqbal reproduces as he meets Rumi for the galactic journey.

Yesterday, Shaykh was searching the city with a lamp in his hands.

“I am tired of action of Evil and Barbarians. I want to witness a Human. With my indolent companions, my heart is weeping. Now it yearns for Lion of Allah or Rustam!”, Shaykh exclaimed.

Hearing this from Shaykh, I replied, “I have been searching such a Human myself, but unable to find yet.”

“The desire is for that, that is hard to be found”, said the Shaykh.
