Dear Brother W
Speaking of Sufi music: this evening I’m sending you an video by Ustad Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan Sahib: “Haqq Ali Ali Ali, Maula Ali Ali”, one of his most famous qawwalis.
It’s part of a concert that Ustad Nurat Fateh Ali Khan gave in the UK in 1983. It’s one of the best versions of “Haqq Ali, Maula Ali” that I know.
Towards the end of the video, Nusrat inserts a girah in Punjabi, which is in a different raga; “Haqq Ali” is in the morning raga Bhairavi and the girah “Raaz-e-Khaibar Shikan Ali Maula” is partly in Urdu and partly in Punjabi., also a morning raga. Although it is a historical fact that Hazrat Maula Ali vanquished the rebellious fortress of Khaibar in Arabia, in this context “Khaibar” symbolises the lower self or nafs, which the Sufi has to subdue.
Enjoy the song, Dear Brother!
Wazir
