Laggi Waleyan Noon Neend Nahi Aandi – Live at PTV – Abida Parveen

Sindhi/Seraiki Sufiana Kalam

‘Laggi Waleyan Noon Neend Nahi Aandi’ is a beautiful poem by Mian Manzoor which is effectively a conversation with Sassi [from Sassi Punnu folk tale]. Per Sindhi folklore, Sassi overslept and her brothers took opportunity to separate her from Pannu, her beloved. The poet asks that since those in love lose their sleep and have no peace, how come Sassi overslept when she was in true love with Pannoo. It is basically using analogy to gently warn lovers to watch out for dangers as being in love is a way of severe hardships.

Lyrics

Laggi Waleyan Noon Neend Nahi Aandi

Teri Kiwaain Ni Ankh Lag Gayee?

Raat Paway Taa Be-Dardaan Noon

Neend Pyaari Aawe

Dard Wandaan Noo Ishq Sajan Da

Baahon Pakar Uthaway

Teri Kiwaain Ni Ankh Lag Gayee?

Paiyan Raah Vich Zulekha Si Kulian

Akhan Heer Diaan Doli Vich Khulian

Adhi Raati Sohni Challan Noon Jagandi

Teri Kiwaain Ni Ankh Lag Gayee?

Transliteration

Those who are in love, have sleepless nights

O’ Sassi, how come you slept while being in love [with Punnu and lost him]

When night descends, then sleep overcomes common people

But for those in love, Ishq wakes lovers by lifting their arms

O’ Sassi, how come you slept while being in love [with Punnu and lost him]
