The Man who was threatened by enemies: Story from Dr. Muhammad Iqbal’s Israr-e-Khudi
A story from Dr. Muhammad Iqbal’s Asrar-e-Khudi (Secrets of the Self) explains how a young man comes to Hazrat Ali Hujwiri R.A. at Lahore for advice, as he is surrounded and threatened by enemies and feels fragile…
Farsi text, with English and Urdu translations.

In the bustling streets of Lahore, beneath a sky heavy with dust and longing, a young man from Merv arrived at the shrine of the revered saint, Ali Hajwiri (R.A.).
Tall as a cypress yet bent with worry, he entered quietly. His eyes carried the fatigue of one hunted not by swords alone, but by fear itself.
Ali Hajwiri looked up, his gaze calm, as if he had been expecting him.
“Speak, my son,” Ali Hajwiri said gently.
The young man fell to his knees.
“I am surrounded by enemies,” he said. “I am like fragile glass among stones. Every step I take feels like it may be my last. Tell me—how does one live among foes?”
The saint studied him for a moment, then smiled faintly.
“You call yourself glass,” he said. “Tell me—who told you that you were so fragile?”
The young man hesitated. “Is it not obvious? They are strong, and I am fragile.”
Ali Hajwiri leaned forward.
“When a stone believes itself to be glass,” he said, “it shatters at the first blow. But when it knows it is stone, it endures.”
The young man frowned. “Then what should I do? Fight them?”
“First,” the saint replied, “you must awaken.”
“Awaken?”
“You are a sleeping force,” Ali Hajwiri said. “You fear others because you do not yet know yourself.”
The young man looked confused. “And my enemies?”
The saint’s eyes softened.
“Your enemies,” he said slowly, “are your hidden friends.”
The young man recoiled. “Friends? They seek to destroy me!”
“And yet,” the saint continued, “they shape you. Tell me—does a seed grow without rain?”
“No.”
“And what is rain to a seed?”
The young man thought. “It brings life.”
“Just so,” said the saint. “Your enemies are the rain. Without them, your strength would remain buried.”
The young man lowered his gaze.
“But their attacks weaken me,” he insisted.
“Only if you believe you are weak,” the saint replied. “If your spirit is strong, even stones in your path will become water beneath your feet.”
The young man remained unconvinced. “Still, every obstacle cuts me down.”
The saint picked up a small stone from the ground and held it up.
“Tell me,” he said, “what sharpens a sword?”
The young man answered, “A hard surface… friction… resistance.”
The saint nodded. “Yes. The sword of resolve is sharpened by the very stones that block its path. And only by striking against them—again and again—is its strength proven.”
He placed the stone back down.
“If the path were smooth,” he continued, “your blade would remain dull.”
The saint continued, his voice firm now.
“What is the use of living like an animal—eating, sleeping, fearing? Life without strength of Self is no life at all.”
“Then what is strength?” the young man asked.
“Self-awareness. Self-mastery. To know who you are,” said Ali Hajwiri.
“And if I gain it?”
“You will not fear your enemies,” the saint said. “You will outgrow them.”
The young man’s voice dropped to a whisper. “And what is death, then?”
The saint smiled.
“Death is not the leaving of the body,” he said. “It is the forgetting of the Self.”
The young man sat still, absorbing each word.
“Be like Joseph,” the saint added. “Rise from prison to the kingdom. But first—know your worth and your Self.”
A newfound strength returned to the young man’s face. He turned and walked out into the light of Lahore—not free of enemies, but no longer afraid of them.

Story of a young man of Merv who came to the saint Ali Hajwiri and complained that he was threatened by his enemies and feels fragile…
The saint of Hajwir [Ali Hajvairi] was even by revered by Pir-i-Sanjar (Khawaja Moeenudin Chishti)
Who visited his mausoleum as a pilgrim
He conquered the huge barriers of [Afghanistan and migrated to Hind]
And sowed the seed of Islam in India
The age of Hazrat Omar R.A. was revived by his piety
The Truth was manifested by his words
He was a guardian of the reverence of Quran
The house of lies fell at his once glance
The dust of the Punjab was revived by his breath
Our dawn was made beautiful by his sun
He was a lover of God, a messenger of Love
The secrets of Ishq emitted from his eyebrow
I will tell a story of this perfect guide
Which condenses an entire rose-garden in a single bud
A young man, tall like a cypress tree
Came from the town of Merv to Lahore
He went to see the respected saint [Ali Hajvairi R.A.]
Like darkness looking for Sun
“I am surrounded by foes” he said,
I am as a glass in the midst of stones
Teach me, O’ sage of bigs ranks
How to live my life within enemies?
The wise adviser, in whose nature
Love had combined beauty with grandeur
Replied: “You are ignorant of Life’s secret
Unaware of its end and its start
Be without fear of others
You are a sleeping force: Awake yourself!
When the stone thought itself to be fragile glass
It became glass and invites fate of breaking.
If the traveler thinks himself weak
He delivers his soul to the bandits to rob him.
How long will you consider yourself as water and clay?
Create from the clay of flaming Holy Mount Sinai
Why be angry with powerful men
Why complain of your enemies
I will declare you the truth, “Your enemy is your friend”
His being crowns you with success and glories
Whosoever knows the secrets of the the Self [Khudi]
Considers a strong enemy to be a blessing from God
To the seed of Man, the enemy is like a cloud bringing rain
He awakens its possibilities to grow
If your spirit is strong, the stones in your path become water
What destroys the torrent of the ups and downs of the road
The sword of resolution is sharpened by the stones in the way
And put to proof by moving back and forth
What is the use of eating and sleeping like animal
What is the use of existence, unless you have strength in yourself
When you make yourself strong with Self-Awareness
You can destroy your enemy at your pleasure
If you would pass away, become free of Self
If you would live, become full of Self (Khudi)
What is death? To become oblivious of your Self
Why imagine that it is the parting of soul and body?
Abide in Self, like Joseph [Hazrat Yousaf]
Advance from imprisonment [of slavery] to empire
Think of Self and be a man of Action
Be a man of God, have secrets within!
I will explain the crux by means of stories
I will open the bud by the power of my breath
“It’s better that a lover’s secret
Should be told by the lips of others”
[Iqbal borrowed the final verses from Mevlana’s Rumi’s Masanvi, Volume 1, Verse 136]
