Rumi and Iqbal: Their mystical relationship beyond Time and Space

iqbal and rumi

Today [9th November] is celebrated as Iqbal day in Pakistan, the birth date of Dr. Allama Muhammad Iqbal.

Iqbal and his spiritual mentor Mevlana Rumi lived in entirely different eras and geographies. However, their spiritual connection needs no introductions, see our other post at Rumi and Iqbal: The Mentor and the Protege.

Per Wikipedia, when Mustafa Kamal Attaturk [Father of Modern Turks] , who was a secular leader, visted Allama Iqbal’s shrine, he brought soil from Rumi’s tomb as tabaruk to sprinkle over Allama grave. As in my account of Pilgrimage to Konya, I was surprised to see a grave of Iqbal in the courtyard of Rumi along with many other dignitaries and followers of Mevlevi order. Like the profound spiritual relation between Mevlana and Shams Tabraiz, its is amazing to learn about such link between Allama Iqbal and Maulana Rumi, an apprentice and protege parted by time and geography yet combined by Self-discovery and immense reverence.
