When Rumi made Amir wait: Story for Fihi Ma Fihi by Maulana Rumi

Maulana relate a story in Fihi Ma Fihi that when Amir Parwana [Duke] came to visit him. Maulana did not attend to his esteemed guest immediately.

The reason for such behaviour can be due to two reasons:

1. The Amir’s presence was a matter of honour for Rumi. If so, the more he waited, the more it increased his respect in eyes of Maulana.

2. The Amir came for his personal gratification. If so, the more he waited, the more spiritual cleaning and blessing he earned from such trial [that Maulana subjected him to]

Whether of above cases is true, the wait that he had to bear at Mevlana’s house brought spiritual benefits for the Amir. For such treatment, the Amir should not become impatient and resent it, since it has profound lessons for the guest.
