Dehr Mein Issm-e-Muhammad (S.A.W.) Se Ujaala Kar De: Jawab-e-Shikwa – Allama Iqbal
Dehr Mein Issm-e-Muhammad (S.A.W.) Se Ujaala Kar De: Verse from Jawab-e-Shikwa by Dr Allama Iqbal
Jawab-e-Shikwa is an epic poem by Dr Allama Iqbal, the Divine reply to his earlier poem Shikwa. It has been subject to lot of research in most languages, hence today we will focus on below stanza only, in which Allah Himself narrates the glory of Prophet’s love, which is the essence of a Momin or Insaan-e-Kamil’s faith.
The verses form Jawab-e-Shikwa with translation follows:
Quwwat-e-Ishq Se Har Past Ko Baala Kar De
Dehr Mein Issm-e-Muhammad (S.A.W.) Se Ujaala Kar De
Ho Na Ye Phool To Bulbul Ka Tarannum Bhi Na Ho
Chamman-e-Dehr Mein Kaliyon Ka Tabassum Bhi Na Ho
Ye Na Saaqi Ho To Phir Mai Bhi Na Ho, Khumm Bhi Na Ho
Bazm-e-Tawheed Bhi Dunya Mein Na Ho, Tum Bhi Na Ho
Khaima Aflaak Ka Istada Issi Naam Se Hai
Nabz-e-Hasti Tapish Aamadah Issi Naam Se Hai
Dasht Mein, Daman-e-Kuhsaar Mein, Maidaan Mein Hai
Beher Mein, Mouj Ki Aaghosh Mein, Toofan Mein Hai
Cheen Ke Shehr, Maraqash Ke Byaban Mein Hai
Aur Poshida Musalman Ke Emaan Mein Hai
Chashm-e-Aqwam Ye Nazara Abad Tak Dekhe
Riffat-e-Shaan-e-‘Rafaana La Ka Zikrak*’ Dekhe
* This is Quranic Ayat, hence in Arabic.
English Translation
With force of Ishq, elevate every low to greatnes
With name of Prophet Muhammad SAW, bring light to the world
Without this flower, the bulbul won’t sing
In this garden of earth, there won’t be smiles of flowerbuds
Without this Saaqi [cup-bearer], there is no Wine, no Jar.
There will be no tawhid in world, neither will be you, neither me
To sustain this tent of blue skies, this great name is essential
The blood in veins of being, the warmth of life is because of this name
In deserts, valleys among mountains, in plains
In oceans, in arms of seawaves, in roar of hurricanes
In cities of China, in deserts of Morocco
And it is hidden in the faith of every true Muslim
Let the eyes of nations, be witness of this till end of times
The elevated glory of ‘‘And We [Allah] has raised high for you [Prophet SAW] your repute*”
The last verse mentions وَرَفَعْنَا لَكَ ذِكْرَكَ, which is Ayah from Quran and translates as ‘And we has raised high for you your repute’. It is from Surah Al-Inshirah [الشرح], which means ‘Comfort’ or ‘Solace’, or literally the expansion of the breast or heart. It is 94th Surah and is revealed in Makkah during the times when Prophet SAW was faced extreme censure and hostility from people of Makkah.
This Surah came as a solace and blessed news from Allah, where He comforts Prophet SAW and exclaims that He has elevated his repute. The Surah states the famous verses “Verily, with hardship, comes ease.” twice, effectively implying that for each difficulty faced by us, Allah sends relief and solace.
At the end of Surah, Allah asks Prophet to stand in worship and prayers, once he has done his daily duties. Such instruction also exists in Surah Al-Muzzammil with more details. It is an instruction to do zikr during the night time, since during the day he is performing his social duties as Prophet.
The translation of Surah Al-Inshirah with translation [courtesy of Saheeh International] follows:
